My capstone project is a hybrid media short film with stop motion and VFX. When most people think of visual effects they think of the latest blockbusters, seamless CGI characters and award-winning digital backgrounds. Most people wouldn’t think of these types of VFX-heavy films as hybrid media but they are. I want to study the use of hybrid media in VFX, understanding the difference between hybridity as a tool and as a style using media like stop motion, CGI and 2D elements can convey certain ideas in a playful way. For example a day in the life of someone with ADHD.
I created two of these shots (pictured below) I did each part of the pipeline for these shots including pre-production, story boarding, animatics and filming, modelling in Maya, Vellum liquid simulation in Houdini and Compositing in Nuke X.
My role in this project was mostly compositing and simulation. I also was heavily involved in pre-production. This was my first time using NukeX and my first time working with tight deadlines. My skills have improved a lot over the years but I learned valuable skills on this project.
